UK weather: Temperatures set to climb as weekend in the sun is forecast by Met Office

After basking in the sun during the Easter weekend, May has been a bit of a disappointment.

Windy weather, rain and low temperatures have meant the sun hat and sandals have stayed well and truly indoors.

But it looks like we could be in for a weather shake-up which will come as welcome news for many of us.

"Above average" temperatures and even "wall-to-wall sunshine" have been predicted for the UK this weekend.

In fact, highs of 17C are forecast for Bristol on May 12, and the day is set to have sunny intervals according to the Met Office.

Richard Miles, who works as a meteorologist for the forecaster, said while “wintry showers” have blighted the nation, we could be treated to “almost warm” weather soon, the Daily Star reports.

He said: “Between now and the weekend there will be some unsettled weather with quite a lot of rain spreading north-westwards on Wednesday.

“The rain will be slow-moving and some of these showers will be heavy and thundery with hail in some isolated places“

High pressure is expected to settle over the country pushing away the Polar air and allowing temperatures to rise higher than average for the time of year.

“The rain will hang around, particularly in northeastern parts of the country, through Wednesday and Thursday, and in the north over the hills there could be wintry showers. But this is when the weather forecast takes an unexpected turn for the better."

While it will feel cool in the wind and the rain, milder air will start to come in from the southwest,” he added.

“By the weekend it will be more settled, warmer, drier and much more pleasant in most places."

High pressure is expected to settle over the country pushing away the Polar air and allowing temperatures to rise higher than average for the time of year.

“While it will be warm by day, under very clear skies this heat will disappear and bring the risk of some widespread frosts on Friday and Saturday nights.

"This weekend we are expecting mild, almost warm temperatures and it looks like the relatively settled, mild conditions will hold out into the following week.”

Exacta Weather’s James Madden also hailed the beginning of “prolonged and widespread warmth”.

He said: “There is the potential for some wet and windy weather through the first part of May."

However confidence is high for a switch to something much warmer before the end of the month there is a chance the UK will see an early taste of summer within the next fortnight.

“Many southern parts of the country are likely to bask in temperatures in the mid to high-20Cs at the least with prolonged and warm periods on the cards from mid-May onwards.

“Parts of the country can look forward to periods of prolonged and widespread warmth with ample wall-to-wall sunshine from mid-May onwards."
