UK weather: Temperatures plunge as heatwave replaced by wind and rain

This week will see a return to cooler, 'more springlike' weather, after the Bank Holiday's heatwave.

Wind and rain will spread across most of the UK today (Tuesday) following highs of 24C recorded on Saturday in London.

Experts at the Met Office said the nation would continue to see more cloud and wind in the coming week, but "nothing significant or unusual", reports the Mirror.

"Part of spring's charm is you can get both types of weather," a spokesman for the Met Office said.

"May can be quite a topsy-turvy month, getting closer to the start of summer. It's not unusual for spring to have a hot part and a colder part."

The return to duller weather comes following record-breaking April sunshine - with all four UK countries recording it among the top five sunniest since records in a series from 1929.

On Tuesday, May 12, residents in Bristol will wake to a sunny start but things will turn cloudy by lunchtime. And the city's feels likes temperatures will hover around 12C for most of the day.

Met Office UK weather forecast

Tuesday:

Showers affecting northern, central and eastern parts, turning wintry across northern Scotland. Dry in the south and west with variable cloud and sunny spells. Feeling less cold as winds ease

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Showers in the north and east on Wednesday, dry with sunny spells elsewhere. Scattered showers northern Scotland Thursday and Friday, otherwise dry with sunny spells. Cold overnight, risk of frost.
