UK weather: Sunny spells and rain bring unsettled start to the week

Britons can expect an unsettled start to the week following a largely dry and sunny weekend, forecasters say.

Large swathes of the UK will get off to a bright start on Monday, although rain and cloud are expected later in the day.

An area of high pressure hanging over northern Scotland will make its way south into England and Wales as the day progress.

There will be some bright spells in the north of England but also some showers, with highs of 18C Liverpool and 17C in Glasgow.

Showers are expected western areas, with more frequent rain for northern Scotland, according to the Met Office.

Southeast England will remain bright and sunny until the evening when that low pressure brings cloud and rain.

Temperatures will be a few degrees down on Sunday, with highs of 23C expected in London, although it will feel slightly cooler.

Going into Wednesday, it will be cloudy for most with some scattered showers at times, although with occasional brighter spells possible, particularly in the south.

During the afternoon, more persistent rain will then move into Northern Ireland and the far west of Scotland. It will feel cool in moderate northwesterly winds.

Wednesday will be a cloudy and dull day for most with some patchy light rain or drizzle at times, although eastern areas will tend to see drier conditions.

Thursday is expected to be another mostly cloudy day with a few showers, although many areas should be dry. A few sunny spells in the south.
