UK weather: Summer washout continues with downpours but mercury set to hit 25C this week

More downpours will lash a drenched nation today but forecasters are predicting warmer skies which could rise to 25C in the coming days.

After torrential rain and thunderstorms wreaked havoc in large parts of the country on Monday experts predict there will be more settled conditions on Tuesday.

The Met Office said in its forecast some regions will still see heavy showers and more rain throughout the day but it will be warmer and sunnier in the south.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: "Tuesday's forecast is again sunshine and showers but there won't be as many downpours, they wont be as intense as Monday's showers either.

"Large parts of the country will be dry and fine with spells of sunshine."

He added that northern England and north eastern Scotland will see showers with the eastern areas of the UK also seeing rainfall as the day goes on.

Much of the south and west will stay dry and bright, though, and temperatures will be about average but feeling warmer, with 24C likely in some places.

On Wednesday more rain and cloud will descend on the nation but the mercury is set to climb and could peak at 25C in some areas.

The warmer skies comes a day after downpours and thunderstorms brought travel chaos to parts of the UK on Monday.

The Met Office had issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms as heavy showers triggered flooding and travel disruption.

Footage taken in Greenford, west London, on Monday afternoon showed cars ploughing through a flooded street, with one motorist appearing to push his vehicle through knee high water.

The Met Office said that temperatures are expected to rise and could hit highs of 25C on Thursday.

Forecasters said a brief ridge of higher pressure on Tuesday will bring more settled conditions across the UK before low pressure returns on Wednesday with a front that moves from west to east, bringing rainfall for much of the country.

Oli Claydon at the Met Office said that people can then expect "heavy blustery showers for the northern half of the UK with a greater chance of it remaining dry in the south and east".

UK Weather Forecast
