UK weather: Sub-zero temperatures to hit North East as snow sweeps in from Europe

Wintry conditions are set to return to the UK as a cold snap makes its way from the North Sea.

Blustery showers, sleet and snow will move in to replace the balmy conditions that bathed much of the UK in recent days.

Arctic winds will bowl in from the north-west after high pressure rolls away eastwards allowing the big change in the weather.

Temperatures could fall back into single figures with highs of just 9C compared to the high teens enjoyed by many before the clocks changed.

The change in weather is linked to a band of more unsettled conditions driving in from the north Atlantic with temperatures falling back sharply.

There could be some frosty nights with sub-zero values in many places. Gales are also predicted on Tuesday night into Wednesday with some strong winds also possible on the west coast.

Showers of sleet or snow could also pile in from the North Sea to underline the wintry feel and there could even be a covering as far south as the Pennines.

In the North East , the Met Office predicts rain and hill snow will hit from Tuesday onwards. However it is set to be "interspersed by bright or sunny interludes".

Much of the week will be cold and blustery before temperatures recover slightly by next weekend.

But it will feel much cooler because of the harsh wind chill.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel  said: “From Monday, marked low pressure migrating from the north-west to south-east will bring cloudy, wetter and chillier conditions.

“Sleet or light snow can be expected at higher elevations from Tuesday to Thursday, and even fall at lower elevations on Wednesday. Wind chill will effect temperatures, making the mercury feel closer to 0C at times.”
