UK weather: Sub-zero temperatures to batter Brits as big freeze returns for March

Brits are set to be battered by more freezing temperatures this week as the UK's sunny spell draws to a close.

Despite a weekend of bright skies, temperatures are expected to plummet to lows of around -1C from March 5.

The latest chilly spell is set to continue on through to the middle of March as Atlantic frontal systems introduce occasional wetter weather and normal to colder than normal conditions for a time.

The  Met Office  said the weather this week should remain dry and bright until Wednesday - however we're facing colder spells going forward.

It said: "Cloudy with showery rain for southern areas Wednesday, this clearing Thursday.

"Much colder, clearer weather already across the north, then follows southwest late Thursday. Frosts becoming widespread."

Temperatures are not predicted to rise back into the double digits again until later on in the month, from March 23.

A spokesperson added: "Temperatures are likely to remain around average for the time of year, however a short colder spell is likely to occur at the end of next week for a time."

But while the weather will get cold, experts have rubbished claims of a "snow bomb" - a 270 mile snowstorm - on course to hit Britain next month.

The cold spell follows a warm weekend across the UK, where temperatures were mild with highs of 15C reported in the south.

Today:

Areas of low cloud and fog reluctant to clear some eastern and central areas in particular, and where this happens it will feel cold. Many southern, western and northern areas should feel pleasant under sunny skies this afternoon.

Tonight:

Low cloud will spread back across many southern areas, with a mix of low cloud and fog across the east and northeast. Some western and northern areas clear and frosty.

Tuesday:

Low cloud and fog probably retreating to some eastern and northeastern areas, where it will feel cold. In contrast, many southern and western areas sunny and pleasantly mild by afternoon.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Cloudy with showery rain for southern areas Wednesday, this clearing Thursday. Much colder, clearer weather already across the north, then follows southwest late Thursday. Frosts becoming widespread.
