UK weather: Storm Atiyah set to batter country as Met Office issues warning

A weather warning has been issued by the Met Office with Storm Atiyah set to bring 70mph winds to the UK.

The yellow warning currently encompasses areas including Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and is in place from 3pm on Sunday (December 8) to 9am Monday (December 9).

The weather agency says severe gales are expected and may cause some disruption, Mirror Online reports.

More heavy winds and rain showers are expected on the day of the general election (December 12).

Met Éireann has also issued wind warnings for the entire Republic of Ireland.

The blustery weather is being caused by a deep area of low pressure expected from the west and winds are expected to reach 50-60mph inland and 70mph on the coast.

The Met Office has warned the public to expect delays to road and rail travel as well as some short term loss of power for badly affected areas.

Met Office five-day weather forecast

Friday

Windy with rain or showers at times during the day.

Some bright or sunny spells spreading in from the north-west.

Milder than recently for most of England and Wales but a colder day than Thursday over Scotland and Northern Ireland.
