UK weather: Storm Arwen named by Met Office as strong winds and cold front to hit West Country

The Met Office has named a storm that is set to sweep through the UK in the coming days.

Storm Arwen is expected to land on Friday (November 26) and Saturday, bringing cold temperatures and strong winds.

The forecaster had already issued weather warnings for both days, with a yellow warning for wind in place for almost the entire country on Saturday, including the West Country.

An amber warning is in place for parts of the North East and Scotland on Saturday, as well as on Friday. A yellow warning for wind covers other areas on Friday, including some parts of the South West, but narrowly misses Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire.

The Met Office announced this morning (Wednesday, November 25) that the conditions had warranted a name.

It tweeted: "#StormArwen has been named and is forecast to bring a period of very strong winds and cold weather to the UK from Friday into Saturday.

"Disruption to travel and infrastructure is likely over the coming days with warnings in force."

According to the forecaster, the criteria used for naming storms factors in both the impact the weather might have, and the likelihood of those impacts occurring.

A storm will be named when it has the potential to cause an amber or red warning, or its impact could lead to other weather events like flooding.
