UK weather: Southern scorcher as mercury hits 25C but torrential rain to lash the North

Soaring temperatures as high as 25C will hit the south on Thursday but elsewhere 'blustery showers' will soak northern Brits.

It's a tale of two halves across the UK today as half of the country basks in glorious hot weather and dry, sometimes bright, skies.

Meanwhile, torrential rain will lash the north of the nation with heavy rainfall predicted and temperatures barely creeping into the high teens.

The Met Office said while there is some uncertainty as to where the rainy weather will hit many will see heavy rain today while some will enjoy warmer skies.

Forecaster Alex Deakin said: "There will again be some sunny spells around during Thursday, however we are looking at some increasingly blustery conditions across parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland during the day.

"The winds will be picking up across northern Britain during Thursday and there will be lots of showers [close to that area]."

He added that while blustery showers will be felt in the north, large parts of the country - particularly in the south - will stay dry and bright.

While temperatures are predicted to stay cool in northern regions in the south east the mercury could reach highs of 25C in some areas.

Forecasters added the weather picture would likely remain similar moving into Friday.

It comes after it emerged recent heatwaves that saw temperatures rise into the 30s were unlikely for August and it remains unclear if the country has already seen its best weather of the year.

The Met Office's Stephen Dixon told the Mirror: "There is still some unusual uncertainty going into the weekend and still plenty to play for for next week."

He said charts show Saturday's 23C in the southeast is probably the best the rest of the week has to offer.

Meanwhile, long range forecasts from Netweather are predicting temperatures of more than 25C for later in the month.

And some areas of the south west could see soaring temperatures as high as 27C on Sunday August 22, the forecaster claims.
