UK weather: SNOW warning as Britain to be battered by thundery showers and hail

A snow warning has been issued with much of the UK set to be battered by thundery showers and hail today.

The Met Office have put out a yellow alert for snow on high ground in Wales which is in place until 11am, with between two and six centimetres of snow forecast.

Roads and railways could be affected by the severe weather with longer journey times for travellers .

Overnight, temperatures plunged to as low as -2.9C in Santon Downham in Suffolk, while snow began falling on higher ground in places including Powys in Wales.

But the forecaster has also warned of rain, sleet and snow are expected to affect driving conditions on Thursday morning.

Wales and the West Midlands will be the worst hit.

The Met Office urged drivers to take care on icy stretches of road.

Forecaster Luke Miall said: "It will cause some disruption for the morning commute in certain areas. There could be some minor road closures if it's particularly bad over some of the higher routes."

Temperatures are predicted to struggle to get above 10 or 11C, but could feel as low as 7 or 8C in the wind and rain.

The forecast for today reads: "Sunshine, showers and spells of rain, the latter particularly across Scotland at first, Northern Ireland later and southwestern areas in general, with early hill snow over Wales.

"Showers will be heavy and thundery with hail and it will feel cold."

There could even be a patchy frost overnight tonight with some heavy bursts of freezing rain.

Yesterday a "sudden microburst" of hail and snow caused a 24-car motorway pile-up.

Blizzard conditions were reported in strong winds in Northumberland and Cumbria, and a number of roads were closed in Scotland where wintry conditions wreaked havoc and snow ploughs were even getting stuck.

Friday could see rain in the west and far north, with conditions being brighter elsewhere.

The weekend will feature drizzle in the east, with brighter spells in other parts of the country and conditions becoming warmer away from the east coast.

Saturday should be drier and warmer, the forecaster notes.

According to BBC weather the high pressure will reach the UK on Monday.

BBC Weather’s outlook from April 8 to 14 said: “This will maintain an easterly airflow during the first half of the week, although this won't bring any cold air from Scandinavia.

“In fact, temperatures will be about normal for the time of year, and there will be a lot of dry weather too, with the winds often light."

There are currently odds of 2/1 of this year being the hottest Easter on record, according to bookies Ladbrokes.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "We're not yet putting all our eggs in one basket this Easter, but we're not yet ruling out a record-breaking few weeks ahead."
