Wintry weather will continue across the UK on Friday, with rain and sleet affecting most areas.
The main risk of snow remains over the hills of Northern England and Scotland and will be most prominent in the morning hours.
Cold weather is expected to blow throughout Britain and it will be windy for most, with gales felt in coastal locations.
The Met Office has warned the UK could experience the lowest overnight temperatures of the year, with north-west Scotland expected to plunge to 10C (14F) in the next 24 hours.
There are also warnings that icy temperatures could cause showery rain to fall as sleet or snow in parts of Wales and southern England, such as Wiltshire and Hampshire.
Alex Burkill, meteorologist at the Met Office, said the “most significant snow” was likely to fall in Cumbria and the Pennines - where areas above 400m could see up to 10cm.
“That's a significant amount of snow especially this early in December" he said.
“The snowiest months are usually a bit later into winter, January and February and also it's very early in December at the moment.”
Later on Friday, the North-South divide will grow as brighter skies and drier weather is forecast in the South, and wet weather continues further north and to the east.
It will continue to feel very cold into Saturday, with some pockets of showers. Yet overall, we can expect drier and calmer conditions.
And in the latter half of the weekend, the weather will improve throughout Britain with brighter, drier and less windy weather seen.
However, there will remain some spells of drizzle over north-eastern parts of the UK and wintry showers in Northern Scotland.
The Met Office said temperatures going into next week would be lower than the average annual temperature, which is usually around 7-9C (45-48F).
