UK weather: Snow and ice to blanket parts of UK after furious gales cause chaos

Snow and ice will blanket parts of the UK today after ferocious winds tore across England and Wales causing widespread chaos.

A severe weather warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office for parts of Scotland until 10am.

The yellow warning is urging people to expect 'travel disruption' from icy stretches as well as snow on higher ground.

Up to five cm of the white stuff is predicted to fall and 'wintry showers' will continue to pummel the area.

Forecasters said that some roads and railways would be affected and there would be longer journey times by road and rail.

There are also warnings of injuries from slips and falls on the ice as well as some icy patches on untreated surfaces in the affected region.

Elsewhere, heavy rain will continue to batter many parts of the UK, while some areas will enjoy sunny spells as the weekend draws nearer.

It comes after ferocious winds caused chaos across large swathes of Britain with a train derailed in Kent amid gale-force winds and homes plunged into darkness with cuts to power.

England and Wales were hit by strong winds that reached 86mph overnight, causing problems on the roads that saw lorries tipped over, sparking long delays.

The yellow weather warning for wind has since passed and forecasters are now predicting a return to more spring-like weather with some sunshine as well as showers expected for today and into the weekend.

Friday will see a mixed picture, the Met Office said, that includes both showers and sunny spells, along with the snow fall predicted to hit parts of Scotland.

There will continue to be 'very windy' weather in parts of the south west and by the weekend rain, scattered showers and some sunshine will eventually turn milder into next week.

With the torrential rainfall over the last few days the Environment Agency has upped its number of flood warnings.

Across England there are now seven flood warnings, mostly in the north of England, meaning immediate action is required, as well as 31 flood alerts, meaning a deluge is possible.
