UK weather: Snow and hail to hit over -1C weekend - before Monday beer garden sunshine

Snow, sleet and hail could strike the UK this weekend before the weather perks up just in time for the return of beer gardens on Monday.

The mercury will plunge below freezing in London on Sunday with daytime temperatures struggling to climb over 8C.

Heavy showers will hit much of the country today with the rain turning to sleet for some.

The best of the weather will be in Wales and the South West, with snow and hail possible in parts of the north.

But drier and brighter weather is just around the corner for much of the country, which will be a relief to many as pubs in England reopen on Monday.

Outdoor hospitality is returning as part of Step 2 of the Government's lockdown roadmap, along with hairdressers and gyms.

People will be able to stay dry in pub beer gardens, although temperatures are set to stay chilly until later next week.

The Met Office tweeted: "The #4cast is looking #colder on Friday, especially for northern parts of the UK, with further #wintry showers for Scotland & Northern Ireland. Cloudier across central and some southern parts of England & Wales with some rain."

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said Monday would be “a cold day with bright weather for most”, adding: “It’s certainly looking fine, dry and cold in the South.”

England endured its coldest April day in eight years on Wednesday, with the temperature hitting a freezing -7.5C in Benson, South Oxfordshire.

Parts of southern UK rather cloudy, with showery rain in places, perhaps heavy by afternoon, even sleety in places later. Brighter in parts of Wales and southwest England. Further north, sunny spells and showers of sleet, snow or hail. Cold.

Tonight

Rain, sleet and perhaps some wet snow in some southern parts this evening, easing overnight. Scattered sleet or snow showers in northern areas but many inland areas clear and frosty.

Sunday

Most areas seeing sunshine at times. However showers of hail, sleet and snow, mainly towards coasts at first, developing more widely by afternoon. Still cold but winds mostly fairly light.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Cold at first before gradually turning warmer. Cloudy with rain in parts of the west on Monday, drier and brighter elsewhere. Sunny spells and scattered showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
