UK weather: Snow and hail could hit this weekend

Temperatures are about to take a dramatic plunge following scorching sunshine this week.

The mercury climbed to a balmy 17C in the south west of England on Tuesday as millions of people who were staying home were able to enjoy the sunshine in their gardens.

But sadly the glorious weather is not predicted to last long with forecasters saying snow and hail could hit large swathes of the UK by the weekend.

The BBC Weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood said: “This weekend it is going to be dry for many and there will be some sunshine. But on Sunday there will be some wintry showers - that means a mixture of hail, sleet and snow almost anywhere.”

Experts at the Met Office said today (Wednesday) should be dry for most but southeastern coasts will feel colder with brisk winds.

Talking about the outlook for Thursday to Saturday a spokesperson said: "Generally quiet. Showers in extreme north extending down eastern UK Saturday, becoming wintry. Cloudy in north with patchy light rain, slowly drifting south replacing sunny days and frosty nights here."

Bristol residents should wake up to clear blue skies once again today, when temperatures will peak at 14C.

Uninterrupted sunshine is predicted until Friday in our city but each day the thermometer will continue to drop.

UK weather forecast
