UK weather: 'Risk to life' as heavy rain set to batter country

Flood warnings have been issued for large parts of the country today as heavy rain is expected to batter the UK.

Downpours should hit Bristol around noon and continue until around 3pm. Temperatures will peak around 22C.

The Environment Agency has warned of 'danger to life' caused by flooding ahead of thunderstorms predicted across the country.

There could be between 20 and 40mm of rain in some areas of the UK each day this week, according to  netweather.tv .

Lightning will continue in Scotland on Wednesday afternoon, although the weather is expected to be replaced by heavy showers in the evening, with the sun making an appearance in Wales and central and south-east England.

Thursday looks set to be a drier day, although wet conditions will return on Friday, when rainfall is expected across the UK.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Sunny spells and scattered showers on Wednesday. Dry at first on Thursday, before heavy rain arrives in the afternoon. Friday will bring heavy and blustery showers with thunder in places."
