UK Weather: Relentless rain continues but three-day 27C scorcher is on the way

After a washout weekend and days of thunderstorms and heavy rain Brits are set to bask in a three-day scorcher.

A 27C mini-heatwave is predicted to sizzle the country this week with the brightest sunshine forecast to begin on Wednesday.

But before then the summer showers are set to continue over the coming days and on the back of days of relentless rainfall.

While most of the weather warnings for thunderstorms that covered the north of England, all of Scotland and Northern Ireland have now expired, there is an ongoing risk in eastern and central Scotland.

A yellow warning stretching from Montrose across to Stirling and Glasgow and down to Dumfries is due to come into force from midday to 9pm on Monday.

The Met Office said there was a risk of sudden flooding and standing water causing difficult driving conditions, as well as delays and cancellations to public services.

There is also a risk of damage to property from lightning strikes and flooding, as well as a slight chance of power cuts.

The Met Office said higher pressure will start to build from the west on Tuesday, bringing more settled conditions for many places by midweek.

Meteorologist Craig Snell said: "For a lot of the UK [on Monday] it will be like what we have seen over the weekend - plenty of showers around and some of those showers will be heavy."

He added: "As we head towards the middle of the week, the showers do take a bit of a step back and we generally turn a little bit drier for most as we go into Tuesday.

"There will be some showers around across northern and eastern parts but they won't be as impactful as they have been."

Mr Snell continued: "Certainly down in the southern half of the UK, we certainly might have a good few decent days towards the second half of the week, where we will replace the showers with some sunshine and some warmer temperatures.

"So it turns into a bit of a north-south split as we go through this week but I think for all of us the heavy rain will have passed."

By Wednesday temperatures are expected to hot up and a plume of heat from the Mediterranean is expected to bring warm skies that could reach as hot as 27C in the south.

UK Weather Forecast

Today:

Another day of sunny spells and showers, some heavy and thundery. The heaviest showers are expected across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and southern England. Breezy again in many areas too.

Tonight:

Daytime showers will gradually fade during the evening and overnight leaving clear spells. A few mist and fog patches are then possible towards dawn.

Tuesday:

A much better day than of late with many areas dry with sunny spells. Still a few showers about for some though, mainly over parts of Scotland.
