UK weather: Rain to lash Britain today but sizzling 26C heat just around the corner

Brits are set to buffeted by heavy rain today as more overcast and cool weather is forecast nationwide.

But temperatures are set to rise with the rain fading away from the weekend onwards, putting barbecues and picnics back on the agenda.

The worst of the rain today will hit western Scotland, Wales and parts of the Midlands, according to the Met Office.

There will also be a 50% chance of rain in London and the south east for much of the day.

Netweather forecasts say a low pressure system will lead to a “showery picture by midweek”, along with the risk of “heavy thundery downpours”.

But, latest Met Office forecasts show temperatures climbing into the 20s from the weekend.

Some forecasters say temperatures could even climb as high as 26C in the south of England on Tuesday next week.

It comes after the UK enjoyed the driest May on record last month and days of sunshine, although Brits spent the month on coronavirus lockdown.

Many Brits soaked up the hot weather on beaches and in parks over the long bank holiday weekend despite coronavirus concerns.

On next week's rise in temperatures, the Met Office says: "Northwestern areas will likely see the best of any drier and sunnier conditions.

"Eastern coasts will often be cooler with mist here at the start of the period.

"Elsewhere though temperatures will be warm or very warm at times."

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon told the Express : “From Thursday the trend towards the weekend is the unsettled nature of the weather continues, with spells of rain and showers at times, but also a warming trend, with temperatures increasing as we go towards the end of the weekend.

“By the time we get to Sunday we’re back to possibly 23C in London and 20C in parts of Scotland as well.”

Today

An unsettled day with most areas seeing a mixture of cloud, a few sunny spells and showers or longer spells of rain. The heaviest showers will tend to be over western Scotland, Wales and parts of the Midlands.

Tonight

Some heavy rain over parts of Wales, Devon and Cornwall. Some showers about for other parts of England whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland become drier.

Thursday

Dry for Scotland, Northern Ireland and northwest England, best sunshine here over western parts. Elsewhere, more unsettled with some showers again, especially over southern UK. Windy.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday

Some sunny spells but most areas seeing some rain or showers, which could be thundery. A brisk easterly wind easing later, generally warm away from the North Sea coast.
