Snowfall will hit Britain and temperatures will plummet throughout the rest of December, forecasters have warned.
A yellow weather warning has been issued for parts of Scotland for Tuesday morning, as forecasters warn of icy patches causing disruption to commuters
“It will be quite a bit colder this week,” said Richard Miles, a Met Office meteorologist.
Snowfall is expected aross the Pennines, parts of North Wales and possibly even the Peak District later this week, he said, adding: “There will be wintry showers there."
It will be the first snow of the season for England, although Scotland experienced some snowfall across the Cairngorms last month.
Southern England will particularly feel the chill, with temperatures dropping from around 13C to 7C on Tuesday.
“It will seem cold compared to what we have experienced so far,” Mr Miles said.
Parts of the region experienced unseasonably warm conditions in November but the Met Office expects the weather to become increasingly unsettled through December.
The end of the week will see “some wet and very windy weather” as rain moves east across England and Wales, it said.
