UK weather: Persistent rain forecast - but it is going to get a little warmer

Heavy rain is set to batter large swathes of the UK today (Wednesday, January 29) but there is some good news as temperatures finally begin to rise.

Parts of Britain were lashed by snow on Tuesday as the country was gripped by another cold snap, with the mercury dipping to -7C in some parts of Scotland.

And a few flakes even fell in Bristol.

But experts at the Met Office say the next few days will feel 'very mild'.

A spokesperson at the authority said: "Wintry showers in the northwest will be replaced by persistent rain through the afternoon, heavy at times.

"Remaining unsettled with spells of wind and rain at times, the rain heaviest for northwestern areas. Often drier across southeastern areas. Mild generally, locally very mild on Friday."

On Tuesday some of the white stuff fell near Bristol Airport, South Wales and in Scotland.

Forecasters however are now predicting the next few days will feel a lot warmer.

In Bristol, residents will wake up to a dry and bright start today, with highs of 9C predicted by lunchtime.

It's likely to turn wetter on Thursday, when there's 50 per cent chance of rain throughout the morning.
