UK weather: Odds for hottest July on record slashed as temperatures set to soar

Bookmakers have slashed the odds on it being the hottest July on record as UK temperatures are set to soar next month.

Unpack the paddling pool because the odds of another sweltering heatwave have been cut from 5/1 to 5/2.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Brits will soon be sizzling in record-breaking July sunshine if the latest odds are anything to go by."

Brits could see 25C by the weekend as lockdown is eased in England, with potential for sustained warm weather in the coming weeks.

But first, large swathes of the UK could be hit with further downpours today (Wednesday) which will be heavy at times.

The warmest weather will be enjoyed in the southeast. Highs of 13C are expected in Edinburgh compared to the mercury climbing to a balmy 21C in London.

"Relatively dry, settled and warm conditions...bringing some sunshine for most parts" is likely from the middle of the month, the Met Office says, with some weather charts predicting the UK will sizzle.

Weather charts and long-range forecasts for the end of June indicate that we could be in for weeks of sustained warmth.

Although temperatures in the mid-20s seem widespread, a surge could see them rise to around 30C in the South East, according to WX Charts.

The Met Office says from Tuesday, June 30 to Tuesday, July 14 temperatures should generally be above average, possibly turning "very warm" in places.

A spokesperson said: "From July 13, It looks as if relatively dry, settled and warm conditions may be established, bringing some sunshine for most parts, particular southern and central areas.

"The northwest may still be more changeable with nearer normal temperatures. For the rest of July confidence is very low.

"However, conditions will more likely be rather changeable, bringing spells of rain or showers, mixed with drier and brighter interludes.

"Later in the period it is possible that there will be some longer, more settled spells allowing it to become warm at times."

Showers are expected in Bristol this morning before sunny spells this afternoon. The mercury will peak at 19C, but the feels like temperature will be a bit cooler at 17C.

UK weather forecast

Wednesday:

There will be sunny spells and showers for most areas, these heavy at times over parts of England and Wales in the afternoon and evening. Warm in the southeast.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

A mixture of showers, rain (heavy/persistent on western high ground), and some sunny spells; the best of the sunshine for eastern, especially southeastern areas where warm. Western coasts often cloudy/murky.
