UK weather: More downpours expected as cold snap arrives

More downpours are set to hit large swathes of the UK today as temperatures plunge by 10 degrees.

Tuesday's wall to wall sunshine already feels like a distant memory as most of the country was battered by rain on Wednesday.

Today (Thursday) will see more showers and the 'odd heavier one by the afternoon', according to experts at the Met Office.

Showers are expected in Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales, with temperatures unlikely to climb any higher than 20C in most places.

In many parts, including the South West and Midlands, the maximum temperature could be as low as 11C or 12C, and further north the mercury could struggle to get above 10C.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin told the Mirror: "We're saying goodbye to the prolific temperatures of mid-20s almost nationwide, and now we're seeing something returning much more to normal, or even actually quite cold for the time of year to be honest, depending on where you are in the UK."

Today will be cloudy in Bristol but forecasters are not predicting any rain.

The mercury is expected to climb to around 16C before dropping to 15C on Friday.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

A mixed day: some sunshine but equally quite a lot of cloud, and a cool northerly breeze. Many areas seeing one or two showers, the odd heavier one by afternoon.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

A much cooler weekend than of late with showers or longer spells of rain, some heavy, especially across the north and east. Windy for many with gales possible in places.
