UK weather: Met Office yellow weather warning in place as winter arrives

Winter will arrive with a distinct chill for Friday and the weekend ahead for much of the UK, with a Met Office yellow warning for ice across large parts of England and Wales.

The weather warning came into effect at 12.15am and through the early hours of Friday morning, and will remain in force until 10am.

The area affected stretches from East Anglia, across central England into mid and north Wales, and includes parts of Gloucestershire.

The forecasters at the Met Office are warning that the ice will mean icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, and there’s the danger - obviously - of some injuries from slipping or falling on the ice.

The forecast shows why - temperatures will drop to freezing across much of England and Wales, but at least Friday will be a bright and sunny - if crisp and chilly - day.

In Bristol, clear skies will see temperatures drop to just 4degC at a low point of 9am, before the rising sun will slightly warm things up again.

There will be wall-to-wall sunshine, albeit of the late November weak variety, and temperatures will scrape up to just 7degC in Bristol by the end of the day.

And because of a nasty north to north-easterly wind chill, it will actually feel a few degrees cooler than this all day.

The outlook for the weekend ahead is more of the same - a cloudy and cold Saturday, but better on Sunday when the sun will return.

Overall, though, it will be dry, and getting colder as the clear skies will see temperatures drop to below freezing for Monday morning, according to the forecasters.
