UK weather: Met Office warning issued for flooding

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for most of the country today.

The alert will be in force from midnight until 3pm on Tuesday as downpours lash the majority of England

Meteorologists expect rain all week after Sunday's downpours brought an end to our Indian summer.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson told the Mirror : "It will be an unsettled week. Over the next five or six days there will be rain or showers. There's a potential for localised flooding.

"There will be heavy rain, potential hail, thunder and lightning and gusty winds.

"We could see 70mm of rain in a few places. The average rainfall for the UK in September is 96.4mm."

Mr Wilson added that it will be a dry start today, with rain moving across the country later on - and heavy showers tomorrow.

The Met Office weather warning for Tuesday stated that flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.

It added: "Spells of rain and heavy showers are expected to affect southern parts of England and Wales during Tuesday.

"The heaviest rainfall is likely to be during the morning.

"Around 20 to 40mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely, with the potential for up to 70mm in a few locations.

"Much of the rain will fall in a relatively short space of time, typically less than six hours. The location of the very heaviest rainfall is currently still somewhat uncertain."

Here in Bristol downpours are expected between 6am to 10am and 4pm until midnight. However, it should still feel quite warm with highs of around 19C.

Met Office weather forecast

Tuesday:

Wet across much of the UK, particularly England and Wales where heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible along with gusty winds. Northern Ireland and northwest Scotland seeing the best conditions.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Rain or showers easing from the west on Wednesday. A further band of rain spreading east across all parts through Thursday, clearing to sunshine and showers by Friday. Often breezy.
