UK weather Met Office warning as snow and ice set to batter UK this weekend

The Met Office has issued another UK weather warning this weekend.

A yellow alert has been issued with snow and ice set to batter parts of the UK this weekend.

The warning, which lasts until Monday, covers most of Scotland, parts of England and Wales as outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected on Saturday evening.

The Met Office says heavy rain and melting snow may bring some flooding and travel disruption on Sunday as well as icy stretches possibly leading to some difficult driving conditions.

The forecasters have said snow may fall on Saturday over the Pennines, North York Moors and the high ground of Wales, while parts of southwest England could see around two to five centimeters of snow.

Heavy snowfall of up to 5-10cm is predicted for the Shetlands with similar forecast for over Orkney.

If you're not a fan of snow, sunny spells across central and southern parts this afternoon have been forecast, though some freezing fog patches lingering.

It is set to be cloudier and windier further north with some rain and hill snow.

The latest weather warning comes as forecasters predict a 'major event' is heading towards the UK in the coming weeks.

A major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event is developing high above the Arctic and is similar to that which triggered the big freeze - or Beat from the East- three years ago.

It could result in the whole country being covered by heavy snow fall and sub-zero temperatures by the end of January into the beginning of February which could hold out until spring.
