UK weather: Met Office says 'snow and ice' risk before Christmas - updated

The weather in the run up to Christmas is to take many forms and as we near the big day we can expect cold spells to punctuate milder weather with the risk of snow and ice.

The Met Office has published its latest long-range UK forecast, taking us up to Monday, December 20, and we can expect some wintry weather mixed in the north of the country but drier and often clear and sunny in the south.

It says we could see snow on Friday, November 26 and then in the period from Monday, December 6 to Monday, December 20.

Below, we'll have a look at what the Met Office says the weather has in store for us in Bristol over the next few days, as well as for the wider South West and then that long-range forecast.

On Sunday (November 21), we should see clear skies and plenty of sun, at least in the morning in Bristol. Cloud will roll in after lunchtime on a day where the mercury will rise to just 8C and fall to 3C.

Monday and Tuesday are both clear days with clear skies, with temperatures again reaching 8C and falling to 3C.

Wednesday will see fog and mist in the morning and will remain over cast into Thursday morning, before the skies clear.

Temperatures hitting just 7C and down to 4C on both days.

Met Office South West forecast

Sunday Evening and Tonight: Skies staying largely clear overnight, allowing temperatures to drop and result in a chilly night. Remaining blustery, particularly along southern coasts where exposed locations could see some strong gusts. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Monday: A chilly start on Monday, but a sunny and dry day follows with clear skies and breezy winds. Temperatures slightly closer to average but still feeling rather cold. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday: Another largely dry day on Tuesday with sunny intervals, then cloudier on Wednesday with outbreaks of rain later. Turning brighter, breezier, and colder again on Thursday with western coastal showers.

Met Office long-range forecast

Thursday, November 25 to Saturday, December 4

Friday the 26th will likely bring cloud, rain, and strong winds to the northwest extending south to affect many areas through the day, some rain may fall as snow on higher ground in the north.

Scattered showers likely to follow later. Feeling rather cold, accentuated by strong winds with coastal gales possible in the northwest. As the period continues winds will be typically from the north and northwest allowing cold conditions to persist.

High pressure is likely to sit to the south or southwest of the UK, so rain and showers are more likely in the north, these could be wintry on high ground and perhaps at lower levels at times.

Likely drier at times in the south and rather cold at times, with overnight frost likely.

Monday, December 6 to Monday, December 20

A generally northwesterly airflow looks set to continue for much of this period, with the most changeable conditions likely to be in the north of the UK.

Showers or longer spells of rain and possibly strong winds are likely across the north, become increasingly likely further north, these interspersed with periods of more settled weather. In the south high pressure is likely to remain close by, giving a good deal of settled and dry weather.

Temperatures will be varied overall with longer mild spells being punctuated by shorter colder spells, with some wintry weather also possible with a risk of snow and ice in the north. During any clear, calm spells, overnight frost and fog are likely.
