Met Office shares new August heatwave forecast - and it's not good news

The Met Office has issued a new forecast about this month's projected heatwave - but sadly it looks to be bad news.

Forecasters have spoken out amid media reports a heatwave could potentially be on the cards.

The weather experts have poured cold water on any hopes of stifling heat during August.

In its update, the Met Office responded to reports of a mini heatwave this week, with highs of 27C likely for three days in parts of the south of England.

Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesman, said: "August has essentially been a case of mixed fortune with some areas seeing drier weather than usual, while others have virtually had a whole month of rainfall in just 10 days.

"We're not expecting to see record-breaking weather, as there have certainly been wetter Augusts in the past but many areas have faced a very wet and intense period of rain.

"We are putting this down to an area of low pressure which is moving slowly across the country bringing the damp conditions many have seen."

August has been a dismal month weather-wise for many people, with heavy rainfall battering the country alongside high winds and thunderstorms.

In its UK outlook from Saturday to Monday, the Met Office says: "Cloud and outbreaks of rain developing in western and then central areas this weekend before clearing southwards during Monday.

"Some sunny spells elsewhere but showery and breezy in the north."

In its forecast for August 16 to 25 it says: "Changeable conditions remain possible across parts of the north and spells of heavy showers or thunderstorms can't be ruled out across parts of the south at times.

"Temperatures expected to be around average for most for this time of year, though with some warmer weather in more settled spells."

Forecasters suggested sunny spells were likely, but dashed hopes of a heatwave for the month.

Mr Madge added that dry weather with sunny spells would be likely for many parts of the country, but said a heatwave was not expected.

He said: "Do not expect to see heatwave conditions, but dry, sunny spells for many.

"However, there may be a few outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland and Scotland as the week progresses."
