UK Weather: Met Office set to issue first ever extreme heat warning

The Met Office has issued its first ever extreme heat warning as the UK continues to experience scorching conditions as part of the July heatwave.

Temperatures have soared into the twenties this week - and the Met Office has predicted the scorching conditions are here to stay on Merseyside with forecasts suggesting we could reach 30 C over the coming days.

And the weather forecasters have responded to the soaring temperatures across the country by issuing an extreme heat warning for regions including West Midlands, South Wales, southwest England and further east into Hampshire.

The extreme heat warning was introduced in June 2021 - and was designed in consultation with Public Health England to highlight the adverse effects a heatwave can cause.

According to Public Health England figures, the summer of 2020 saw 2,256 excess deaths reported during heatwaves, which is the highest number since records began.

The Met Office hope the new extreme heat warning can help the public, businesses and organisations better prepare for hot conditions, thereby reducing disruption and impacts.

The extreme heat warning is expected to be in place until Thursday night.
