UK weather: Met Office issues two-day 'danger to life' warning spanning whole country

You might want to avoid travelling on our roads or trains this weekend after the Met Office has issued 'danger to life' warnings for the entire country.

Beginning at 6pm on Saturday, the warning forecasts 70mph gusts which could bring 38ft waves and might cause nationwide travel chaos, reports the Mirror.

The warning reads: "Very strong winds may bring disruption to parts of the UK later this weekend.

"Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected.

"Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves.

"There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close.

"There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

"There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs."

Experts say there is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris while the warning is in place.

And Saturday could see wind speeds soar, causing 38ft waves on the south coast and 16ft waves on Scotland's west coast.

In Bristol, residents are likely to wake up to a dry and bright start, with only a five per cent chance of rain throughout the day.

It will still feel fairly warm, with temperatures peaking at 9C.

UK weather forecast

Wednesday:

Patchy drizzle for the extreme north but otherwise remaining dry with sunny spells, although overnight mist and fog may be slow to clear. Breezy in the north. Light winds elsewhere.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Thursday and Friday dry for most with overnight frost and patchy fog. Rain will move erratically east across all parts of Saturday, accompanied by strong winds.
