UK weather: Met Office issue weather warning for snow and hail in Scotland and northern England

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow, hail and icy surfaces as a cold blast of winter sweeps down the eastern side of the UK.

The weather warning comes into effect from 8pm tonight (Wednesday, March 30) and lasts until 10am tomorrow, with temperatures expected to drop down below zero.

The area covered by the weather warning covers the eastern half of Scotland, the north east of England and the north Midlands, down as far as Derby and Nottingham.

It will still be noticeably chilly in Bristol too, but the latest forecast suggests the line of snow showers that will travel from north to south across the country will have fizzled out and turned to rain and sleet by the time they reach this far south and west.

A Met Office spokesperson warned anyone in the north east of England to expect: "Snow and hail showers (that) could lead to icy surfaces, with possible travel disruption".

They added that there would 'probably be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, leading to an increased chance of accidents or injuries. Some higher elevation roads may also be affected by snowfull, resulting in longer journey times'.
