UK weather: Met Office has its say on reported three-month heatwave hitting the UK

We have been treated to some fantastic weather this summer and it doesn't look like it's going to come to an end anytime soon.

In fact, it's being predicted that the scorching temperatures could continue until October, with some reports claiming the mercury will reach as high as 32°C in some places in the UK over the coming weeks.

WalesOnline has reported that several national news websites have suggested much of the upcoming extended school holiday period will be a scorcher, with large parts of Britain baking from now until October.

Our sister site said they are forecasting a three-month 'continental heat dome', referencing the Met Office's long-range forecast.

However, they go on to warn we shouldn't get our hopes up just yet, as weatherman Liam Dutton has been calling out various titles for slightly embellishing the truth about the warm front heading our way.

"The relatively high probability of our warmest category does not imply hot weather throughout the three-month period," wrote Dutton on Twitter, quoting the Met Office's official line which merely states that above average temperatures are more likely than below average temperatures as we continue into summer.

He then adds: "The likelihood of a three-month long heatwave is very small. Couldn't be clearer."

He then goes on to highlight stories online making it seem like the baking conditions will be here for the foreseeable.

And he could well be right, as the Met Office's long-range forecast states that "the south and southeast are likely to see localised heavy rain, with thunderstorms possible" between July 25 - August 3.

The good news, however, is that Britain is set to bake in another heatwave next week with forecasters warning temperatures could climb higher than 30C.

In Bristol, the mercury is expected to climb to a sweltering 29C on Tuesday, while Londoners face highs of 31C.
