UK weather: Met Office forecasts 'exact date' heatwave could start in August

The UK can expect to see "above average temperatures" from mid August onwards, according to the Met Office.

August 20 seems to be the date the new 'heatwave' could arrive as meteorologists make medium and long term weather forecast predictions for the country, reports BirminghamLive.

Met Office forecaster Stephen Dixon added: "This weekend is largely unsettled with patchy rain and thunderstorms through to the end of this weekend.

"Those unsettled conditions will be dominate for the early parts of August with temperatures at or just below average.

"It's too early to say if we will have another heatwave in August, but by mid-August there are signals of high pressure bringing drier and warmer air.

"Temperatures will be above average, but the average temperatures for England in August is 21C so still too early to know if it will become a heatwave."

The current forecast from August 10 to August 24, according to the Met Office, is: "Changeable conditions look likely to continue through the start of this period, with sunny spells mixed in with some showers at times or longer spells of rain, these more prevalent in the northwest."

Forecasters at the agency add: "Although confidence in the detail is low, there are tentative signals suggesting that high pressure may become more dominant during the middle of August, bringing more settled, drier and warmer conditions for many.

"There would still be a risk of showers or thunderstorms at times. Temperatures are most likely to be above average."
