UK weather: Met Office forecasts end to sunny weather with snow and hail on cards

Lockdown Britain is braced for a chilly week as the sunny weather disappears over the next few days.

The country has enjoyed a glorious few days of sunshine since the coronavirus lockdown was imposed on Monday.

But temperatures were set to plummet overnight on Saturday to as low as -4C and cloudier, more unsettled weather will take hold next week.

Temperatures by day on Sunday will struggle to reach double digits, with a keen northeasterly wind making it feel colder.

There will be a risk of hail and snow along eastern coasts and inland, although these will become more confined to high ground in the north later in the day.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri says; “It will stay drier and brighter elsewhere, even so, it will be a marked change from the 18 or 19 Celsius we have been seeing in a few spots this week.

"This cold, bright weather is due mainly to a high-pressure system that is developing to the west of the UK, which will bring cold air down from the north."

The weather is set to be mostly dry next week, but showers will hit intermittently, some of them heavy.

Today:

Western parts dry with sunny spells. Wintry showers affecting central and eastern areas, heaviest in the southeast. Windy for many, especially in the south, and feeling cold.

Tonight:

Often cloudy across northern, central and eastern parts, still with a few showers. Skies clearest in the west where a frost is likely. Remaining breezy.

Monday:

Generally cloudier than today, though some sunshine too, mainly in the west. Showers affecting central and eastern areas, some heavy in the southeast. Less windy, though still rather chilly.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Dry, rather cloudy, but some sunshine Tuesday and Wednesday. More cloud, light rain and windy for Scotland and Northern Ireland on Thursday. Sunshine and wintry showers north of this.
