UK weather: Met Office extends timings and area covered by thunderstorm warning

The Met Office has extended both the areas covered and the timings of a weather warning for thunderstorms.

Yesterday, the forecaster issued a warning covering the whole of Wales and most of England, which was due to be in place between 3pm on Sunday, June 23 and 11.59pm on Monday, June 24.

But the agency has now changed the area covered by the warning, and also extended it to Tuesday, June 25.

Devon, Cornwall and Scotland will now all be covered on Sunday - but London is now clear.

On Monday, the very South West of the country misses out, but the South East is covered.

And on Tuesday, most of the south of England will be at risk.

Unluckily for Bristol, the warning will be covered on all three days.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Thunderstorms may develop bringing torrential rain and lightning, with possible flooding and disruption to travel"

When will the warning be in place?

The thunderstorm warning will be in place between 12:00pm on Sunday and 11:59pm on Tuesday.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
