UK weather: Met Office 'danger to life' warning issued as downpours to batter country

The Met Office has issued a 'danger to life' warning for this weekend with 36 hours of heavy rain set to hit the UK.

Disruption and flooding are expected to hit in two areas from noon on Friday until late Saturday evening.

One covers most of Wales with a yellow warning, while the second includes Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne to the north.

Bristol just misses out on the warning, but the city will still be hit by heavy rain.

Before the downpours move in, today (October 22) is expected to be mainly dry with higher than average temperatures of around 16C.

And by Friday the mercury will shoot to 16C in southern England while gale-force winds will hit Scotland.

By Saturday, the Met office says there is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of services to some homes and businesses as the authority has issued two weather warnings.

It also stats that where flooding occurs "there is a slight chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life", reports the Mirror Online.

Driving conditions are expected to be bad, with trains and bus services also affected.

The Met Office yellow warning reads: "Rain is expected to arrive across parts of the UK during Friday and become heavy and persistent, this is especially true for high ground exposed to the strong southwesterly wind.

"There remains some uncertainty to the locations likely to see the highest rainfall totals.

"This rain is expected to continue falling in similar areas for around 24 hours.

"As such during this period 40-60 mm of rain is likely, with perhaps as much as 100 mm over higher ground.
