UK weather: Met Office confirms heavy downpours, gales and thunderstorms

Heavy downpours, gales and thunderstorms are set to batter the UK over the coming days.

Forecaster Aidan McGivern said "showers could strike anywhere" today (Friday) as temperatures drop by a couple of degrees across the country, reports the Mirror.

Experts say isolated thunder could strike and gales will develop across northern Scotland, edging south later.

The meteorologist added Saturday and Sunday will see the weather "turning increasingly unsettled".

Drier conditions will, however, follow for most on Monday, but the second week of June will see a "mixture of sunny spells and showers across many parts", according to the Met Office's long range forecast.

It comes as Boris Johnson urged the public not to start gathering indoors as the weather worsens - warning it could undermine the progress made by the coronavirus lockdown.

The Prime Minister said people may be tempted to organise indoor social gatherings to avoid the rain, but warned the risk of passing the virus on is "significantly higher" inside.

It should be sunnier across Bristol today, although there will still be plenty of cloud. Highs of 15C are expected on Friday before the mercury climbs to a balmy 18C on Sunday.

UK weather forecast

Friday:

Sunny spells and showers for many, some heavy with isolated thunder. Heavy rain and gales developing across northern Scotland, edging south later.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Rain, locally heavy at first, sinks south through the weekend, clearing the southeast by the end of Sunday. Drier conditions follow for most. Windy, with coastal gales; cool for most.
