UK weather: Met Office assesses chances of heavy rain today

Torrential rain, thunder and hail are set to batter Britain today and tomorrow.

The spring sunshine has been brought to a shattering halt after April was set to be the driest since 1938.

Lockdown Brits were tempted out last weekend by temperatures soaring to 25C.

But now, Britain will be lashed by thunderstorms, reports the Mirror.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna told the Sun: “In central and southern England, Thursday will be a cloudy, wet day, with showers getting quite heavy at times."

The grim weather will be accompanied by plunging temperatures, according to the Met Office.

Mr Petagna said: “Some areas will struggle to get above 8C.

“These areas will have been more than 10C higher in the past few days, so it’s a big change.”

The Met Office says some of the showers will be heavy and thundery, with hail expected later in the week.

However, warmer weather with more sunshine is expected to return to much of the country the weekend.

There's 70 per cent chance of rain for most of today in Bristol, which means lockdown residents will have to find indoor entertainment.

Temperatures will hover around 11C on Thursday, before rising to 14C on Friday.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

Rain affecting parts of Scotland. Elsewhere, a mixture of sunny spells and showers, some heavy with hail and thunder in places.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Sunshine and showers on Friday and Saturday. The heaviest and most frequent showers will be across England and Wales. Northern areas dry and bright on Sunday; elsewhere rain spreading northeast.
