UK weather: Met issues yellow warning as thunderstorms set to ravage parts of Britain

The Met office has warned heavy rains and thunderstorm are set to hit the UK on Saturday evening as summer comes to an end.

A yellow warning was issued amid predictions the "sunny and warm" temperatures for many will "turn unsettled".

While Brits up and down the country will experience a "warm, perhaps very warm" Saturday, the Met warned of a strong wind in the west and chances of possibly heavy showers in the southwest of Britain and Northern Ireland later on.

Clouds will increase across much of the British Isles with outbreaks of rain in the west. The southwest of England and Wales, however, are those set to be hit by the heaviest rain.

A warning for Northern Ireland has been put in place for Saturday and Sunday as the region braces for downpours from 6pm tonight.

Different parts of England, including the north and south west, as well as Wales, have a yellow warning in place from Sunday onwards.

The Met Office previously reported remnants of Hurricane Humberto were heading directly towards the UK and were set to hit next week with heavy rain and strong winds.

Issuing the yellow warnings, the agency said there will "likely be" the flooding of a few homes and businesses while "flooding on roads will probably make travelling longer".

Motorists have been advised to avoid travelling in heavy downpours and where possible, to choose main roads where the risk of fallen branches, debris and flooding are reduced.

Sunday will see outbreaks of rain across the country with thunderstorm and heavy rains dragging on from Saturday in certain parts of the UK and spreading northeast.

Other northeastern areas, however, will carry on being warm and dry.

Londoners and south-westerners will still be able to bask in relatively warm temperatures as they fluctuate between 21C and 23C.

Northern Ireland will see its current 19C drop to 17C later in the evening while Scotland's current 22C is set to precipitate to 19C later in the night. Wales will go from the current 23C to 19C from 7pm on.
