UK weather: Major incident declared on Isle of Man as heavy flooding hits Britain

Heavy rains sent water surging down the streets in the Isle of Man, trapping people in their homes amid a day of floods in Britain that left cities underwater.

A major incident was declared in the Isle of Man after a day of heavy flooding swamped vehicles and closed roads and schools.

Dramatic pictures showed floodwater surging down streets with cars washed away and people left trapped in their homes.

The Isle of Man Constabulary warned residents to stay upstairs as they responded to the incident, as authorities worried a high tide around 1.45pm could bring more chaos.

By mid-afternoon, authorities had managed to reopen roads and check on residents in the low-lying village of Laxey, which had been worst hit by the floods.

But they were left to contemplate severe damage to one of the villages worst flood-hit streets.

Police said homes on Glen Road had suffered "major damage."

The forced added it was unlikely the street would be able to be fully reopened anytime soon.

More than 200 flood warnings and alerts remained in place across the UK this afternoon as the Environment Agency cautions Brits to remain vigilant.

And the Met Office is warning more floods are in store for this afternoon as the heavy rains head to the south of England and Wales.

Elsewhere, York and Bristol were among the cities hit while people in Norfolk were earlier told to be prepared to evacuate their homes.

In the Isle of Man, police said earlier roads were severely flooded and several vehicles have been washed away, with at least three people trapped in their homes at one point.

Laxey appeared to have been the worst-hit, as residents were warned by police not to attempt to evacuate their houses amid heavy floodwater surges.

The Isle of Man Constabulary said earlier: “Persons are trapped in at least 3 houses. Fire Rescue and Coastguard are on scene with fast water rescue teams.
