The City of London Corporation, which manages the Lido, shut the queue at about 10.20am because it was already so busy.

Posting on Twitter , they said: “Please be aware that we are now closing the queue for Parliament Hill Lido for the rest of the day as we’re already exceptionally busy with the expected hot weather .

“Please do not arrive at the Lido now as the queue is closed and we will not be able to admit any more swimmers for the rest of the day. Sorry for any disappointment, and thank you for your understanding.”

Police were also reportedly called to Brockwell Lido after "security lost any control of crowds" with queues of up to three hours.

While a third fumed: "Got to queue at 8.40 am - an hour later different gangs of teens kept queue barging. Told security and they said they wouldn’t let them in but it kept on happening.

"Got to front, another sweat bath of teens, couldn’t get in and they shut doors. Abandoned queue. ATROCIOUS.

"The most badly managed system I’ve ever experienced in my whole life - gangs of teens queue barging meant despite queuing 3 hours (this included pregnant women and small children ), still didn’t get to swim even though I turned up at 8.40am. Why was nothing done to stop them...?"

Another also criticised the "lack of foresight and planning".

They added: "Very cross could not get into the lido for my pilates class. Lack of foresight and planning meant police were called Brockwell Lido. Security also gave me wrong information let others in and not me."

Meanwhile Tooting Bec Lido also confirmed it had reached full capacity this morning and is operating a "1 in 1 out system".

They tweeted earlier: "Queue Update- Please note the queuing period at the moment is around 2 hours. Please factor into your visit that we are likely to reach full capacity before midday."

Photos show streams of people overflowing from a nearby park as they try to get to the lido in Herne Hill, South London.

One person claimed they were "getting abused" by a group who were jumping the queue.

He admitted defeat and left.
