UK weather latest: Waterfalls and coastline freeze over in Arctic conditions

Large swathes of water across the UK are freezing over as Arctic temperatures sweep the country.

A waterfall in the Brecon Beacons was transformed to solid ice as the cold weather front dubbed the “Beast from the East” moves across from Siberia.

The cascade near Pen y Fan was not the only expanse of water to freeze over.

In Weston-super-Mare, the tideline turned to ice as the mercury plummets into minus temperatures.

Forecasters have warned of a “potential risk to life” in the unseasonably cold temperatures and the Met Office said there was a good chance rural communities will be cut off with heavy snow showers likely in parts of the country.

In Wales, temperatures will fall to as low as -10C in some parts.

Forecasters said another weather system, Storm Emma, will bring blizzards, gales and sleet to the UK on Thursday and Friday.

Met Office forecaster Frank Saunders said: “Parts of England and Wales are likely to see their coldest spell of weather since at least 2013, and possibly since 1991.

“This could lead to dangerous conditions on roads and pavements and have an impact on people’s health.”

Storm Emma will be “significantly disruptive” with the risk of power cuts and transport delays, he added.
