Snow could fall in Scotland and northern England in the coming days as temperatures fall across Britain, forecasters have said.

Temperatures are set to drop tonight as a widespread frost descends across the UK.

The mercury will plummet to “low single figures,” with higher grounds in Scotland seeing snowfall, the Met Office said.

Daytime temperatures in London and the south-east will be be between 9C and 12C in the coming days.

But in the Midlands, north of England and Scotland, the mercury could drop below zero overnight and be in the "low single figures" during the day.

Thursday’s rain is set to clear, with Friday looking bright, sunny and dry, but conditions are unsettled into the weekend.

The Met Office said some snow may also fall on higher grounds in northern England on Sunday.

Meteorologist Bonnie Diamond said: “It’s looking cloudy in Wales and central and northern England, with rain pushing eastwards for the rest of the day.

“It’ll be wet for much of central and south east England throughout the day, but brighter in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with scattered showers.

“That cloud and rain will move across tonight, with lower temperatures and clear skies leading to widespread frost in Scotland and northern England.

“In the south, the frost will be patchy, but we can expect temperatures in the low single figures.

“It will snow over higher ground in Scotland, which is normal for this time of year.

“Tomorrow will have a bright start, sunny and dry, but a band of rain will push eastwards throughout the day. It could bring snow in higher parts.

“Into the weekend it will be colder in the north and on higher grounds, with a chance of some snow to lower levels on Sunday in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England.

“There is some uncertainty over that front but it looks like the first sign of snow to lower levels.”
