UK weather latest: freezing arctic winds and snow set to hit as 'polar vortex' arrives

Freeze: heavy snow in Germany as the polar vortex arrives in Europe (Picture: EPA)

Fog, frost and snow are forecast in parts of the UK as a so-called 'polar vortex' sweeps across Europe.

According to the Met Office, temperatures in the UK will drop towards the end of January with "an increased likelihood of a change to colder weather becoming established generally, bringing an enhanced risk of frost, fog and snow."

Over the next couple of weeks the UK will see heavy rain, strong winds, snow and showers with gales forecast in the north and west of the country.

London however is set to be reasonably mild over the coming week with temperatures up to 10C.

Elsewhere in Europe heavy snow has caused travel chaos.

Parts of Germany and Austria were hit as authorities closed roads and train routes due to the threat of avalanche and airports cancelled flights.

Munich Airport, the second largest in Germany, saw 120 flights axed and others delayed while workers cleared runways of snow and removed ice from planes.

German police said one person died and two people were seriously injured when their car skidded into oncoming traffic on icy roads near the town of Bad Toelz.

In Austria, training and the qualification stage for the annual Four Hills ski jump tournament was cancelled after more than 50cm of fresh snow fell overnight.

Authorities closed several roads including around Bischofshofen, which is hosting the competition, and Austrian railway company OeBB said several routes were suspended due to the avalanche risk.

Salzburg regional authorities warned against off-trail skiing, adding that "many large, several very large avalanches are likely" that could affect roads and rail lines.

Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported the small village of St Johann was evacuated because authorities feared strong winds could trigger a large avalanche.

Meanwhile, some 600 residents and tourists were stuck in the village of Soelktal following a road closure, the station reported.

Innsbruck airport said "current weather conditions have caused major restrictions in air traffic" and urged travellers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Further significant snowfall is forecast for southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland in coming days.

Separately, authorities in Greece reported travel disruptions due to snowfall in the north of the country.
