UK weather forecast: Britain set for a soaking with 40mm of rain predicted to fall in just two hours

Britain is set to be drenched as the bad weather continues, with forecasters predicting 40mm of rain will fall in the space of just two hours today.

A Yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office as thunderstorms are set to batter most of the country.

Forecasters warned “some communities may be cut off by flooded roads” and there could be possible power cuts.

There are also warnings of delays to bus and rail services, after commuters faced difficulties on Monday and Tuesday.

Flood warnings have been issued for parts of northern England (PA)

There are 10 flood warnings in place across the UK - from North Yorkshire, Lancashire and the West Midlands - with the Environment Agency saying local flooding was possible due to the thunderstorms and outbreaks of heavy rain.

The Met Office said: "Rain will be persistent and heavy in places across parts of central, northern and eastern England and north-east Wales at first on Wednesday.

"During the day rain may turn more showery in places but with a higher chance of thunderstorms by afternoon.

A Yellow weather warning is in place (PA)

"Some parts of northern England could see as much as 40-60mm of rain through Wednesday, while thunderstorms could produce as much as 30-40 mm in 1-2 hours."

In London conditions should be dryer, although showers are warned.

The Met Office said Londoners will see a “largely fine day, with early cloud breaking to warm sunny spells.

“The odd shower will remain possible, mainly in the east at first, and also along the south coast later, however most places will stay dry. Maximum temperature 23 °C.”
