UK weather: Hottest day of the year could also bring storms

Britain baked in the hottest day of the year yesterday (Wednesday) when the mercury climbed to a sweltering 32.6C.

But there's bad news for people hoping for the thermometer to drop today (Thursday) because experts are predicting highs of 33C in some parts.

The Met Office confirmed a temperature of 32.6C was recorded at Heathrow Airport at 2.46pm, on Wednesday making it the warmest day of the year.

And it could get even hotter today, with the mercury set to remain in the low to mid 30s in southern areas.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "We're looking at temperatures in the high 20s or early 30s in most parts.

"The warmest temperatures will be in western parts of England and Wales, where we could see highs of 33C."

There is also a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in place between 4pm today to 9am on Friday.

The alert covers most of the South West, Wales and west Scotland.

It reads: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

"Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closure

"There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

"There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost."

Wall to wall sunshine is predicted in Bristol throughout Thursday when the city will bake in highs of 31C.

Although no rain is predicted, a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms is in place for our city today.

UK weather forecast

Thursday:

Another hot day, Scotland and Northern Ireland warmer than Wednesday. Thunderstorms continuing for north and later west Scotland. Further rain and thunderstorms developing over western parts Thursday night.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Showery rain, heavy and thundery at times, continues northeast Friday, clearing early Saturday. Still hot across some eastern areas at first; cooler, generally unsettled conditions develop through the weekend.
