UK weather: Highs of 29C on 'hottest day of the year' but thunderstorms could follow

The UK is set to swelter in what could be the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures set to reach 29C today (Tuesday).

But the warm period will give way to more changeable weather on Wednesday when the mercury is expected to plummet.

Marco Petagna, a meteorologist with the Met Office, said the south could see the hottest temperatures of the year so far on Tuesday.

Mr Petagna told the Mirror: "From Tuesday we are starting to see some more unsettled weather across Scotland and the gradual trend will be turning cooler across the UK from Wednesday onwards."

Forecasters say northerly winds will bring cooler air and some areas in the south of England could experience thundery showers.

The UK has recorded its sunniest spring since records began in 1929.

More than 573 hours of sunshine between March 1 and May 27 was reported, beating the previous record of 555.3 hours, set in 1948.

It is also expected to be the driest May for 124 years, with official figures on rainfall to be published on Monday.

Bristol will miss out on the warmest weather, with high of 24C expected today. And the week-long heatwave will come to abrupt end on Wednesday, when rain is predicted to lash our city.

UK weather forecast

Tuesday:

Another sunny and very warm day across most areas. Cloud and outbreaks of rain edging slowly southeastwards across northern Scotland with a few heavy showers across southern and eastern Scotland.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Thundery showers likely in the south on Wednesday whilst drier, cooler conditions extend south across northern and central areas. Thursday and Friday will be showery and markedly cooler than recently.
