UK weather: Heavy snow could cut off some areas this weekend, Met Office warns

Yellow weather warnings for snow have been issued by the Met Office with concerns that some areas could be cut off.

East and West Midlands, the North West, South West, Wales and parts of the South East are all affected by the warning from 3am on Saturday until 6pm Saturday.

Further warnings for Scotland and the North East are already in place for today and Friday.

The Met Office is warning that snow will be heavy at times and may lead to some travel disruption.

Weather forecasters warn there is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

Tom Morgan, a Met Office forecaster, said: "More milder conditions are set to move in from the Atlantic on Wednesday evening and will lead to a sort of battleground with the cold air in the north.

"This will cause some of the rain and snow which will impact areas across northern England and Scotland.

"Northern Ireland will see around 30mm of rainfall, while parts of north-west England could experience flooding, as the ground is already very saturated and the rivers are higher than usual".

The Met Office said the UK had experienced its snowiest spell since late January 2019, when 20 weather stations in England recorded accumulations of 5cm or more for three days consecutively.

The national forecaster has also issued yellow rain weather warnings for parts of Scotland today and tomorrow.

The areas affected by the latest yellow weather warning for snow are:
