UK weather: Heavy rain to batter UK as Met Office confirms wettest February on record

Enjoy today's (Friday) sunshine while you can because huge downpours are set to batter the UK next week.

Prolonged heavy rain will lash the UK from Saturday following a short respite from the wet weather on Friday.

The latest forecast comes as experts announced the UK continues to experience one of its wettest, and warmest, winters on record.

Across December, January and February, the country was deluged with an average total of 469.7mm of rain, according to Met Office figures released this week.

It was also been the fifth wettest of any calendar month in a series from 1862 behind only October 1903 (227mm), December 2015 (217mm), November 2009 (215mm), and December 1929 (213mm).

Last month has already been confirmed as the wettest February on record, with an average of 209.1mm measured across the UK.

And it doesn't look like the extreme weather will clear any time soon as experts are predicting another wet week.

On Thursday, up to 30mm of rain fell  in just eight hours in places causing more flooding.

In Bristol residents should wake up to a dry and bright start today with temperatures rising to 9C.

Saturday should remain dry until  around 9pm when the first showers will hit. Persistent rain is then predicted for the following week.

UK weather forecast

Friday:

Many parts dry with sunny spells after a chilly start. Showers in the west moving slowly eastwards. Still rather chilly, but feeling less cold than today in the south.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Unsettled with spells of rain, heavy and prolonged at times in the west, with sunny spells and showers in-between. Often windy with gales possible in the north and west.
