UK weather: Freezing fog will hit UK before temperatures begin to climb

Britain's cold snap will end today (Wednesday) but not before the nation wakes to bone-chilling temperatures.

A Public Health England cold weather alert is in place until 9am today, warning that the elderly, very young and people with medical conditions risk getting ill.

This comes after Britain was blanketed in thick freezing fog and frost on Tuesday morning, which saw cars overturn on icy roads and police issue warnings as driving conditions became treacherous, reports the Mirror.

Experts are predicting cloud will move in across most of the UK as our blue skies are replaced with grey. The south will be especially misty and murky.

Meanwhile there is a north-south divide, with Scotland and the North East look set to enjoy the best of the weather, with the possibility of temperatures hitting 11C today.

Helen Roberts, a meteorologist with the Met Office, told Mirror Online: "It will be quite a grey start across large parts of the UK, particularly in England and Wales, with low cloud and hill fog.

"It won't really brighten up for many throughout much of the day. It will feel cold under the cloud cover."

It will feel a lot warmer for residents waking up in Bristol today. The mercury will hover around 4C during the morning school run and climb to a seasonally balmy 7C by the afternoon.

Met Office weather forecast

Wednesday:

A predominantly gloomy day for most on Wednesday, with occasional drizzle. The chance of the odd bright spell towards the evening time. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Thursday and Friday look set to see a continuation of the damp and murky theme. Winds will strengthen through the day on Saturday, as unsettled conditions make a return overnight.
