The UK is facing the prospect of freezing fog as it welcomes in the New Year.
The Met Office predicted patches of rain across the country on New Year’s Day, along with a colder yet sunnier climate in the north and milder temperatures in the south.
It said most areas would be cold and frosty on Tuesday night, with patches of freezing fog and showers.
The rest of the week is set to turn brighter and colder, with temperatures dropping below freezing.
Wednesday will be cold and dry, with sunny spells, though overnight freezing fog patches could linger.
The remainder of the week was predicted to be dry, yet cold with overnight frost. Freezing fog could also be slow to clear.
It comes after mild weather over the Christmas period.
The Met Office’s long range forecast predicts frosty starts and fog patches, though most places are likely to be dry with sunny spells.
More unsettled conditions are possible towards the end of the second week of the new year, with periods of rain and strong wind forecast.
There is also a chance of snow in the north, though temperatures are likely to recover close to the average for the time of year.
Heavy rain and severe gales are possible later in the month, with an increased chance of cold weather.
Colder temperatures could bring an increased risk of frost, fog and snow.
