UK weather forecast: Flooding misery as two weeks of rain to fall in 24 hours

Britain will be battered by more rain today as a further deluge brings more Christmas travel chaos.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain across the south of England with up to an inch of rain expected in some parts of the country.

There are more than 300 flood warnings in place across England, according to the Environment Agency.

Widespread flooding is expected in southern England as the Met Office forecast that two weeks' worth of rain could fall in 24 hours.

It comes after yesterday causing huge damage to homes, cars and gardens.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: "It's going to be very wet in southern parts as we go throughout the rest of today and into tomorrow.

"Rainfall totals are only looking like 20-30mm, so not exceptional for the time of year, but because it's been so wet this month and through the rest of autumn, there could be some flooding in these areas.

"The roads within the warning area, there is a risk of seeing slow travel times.

"It's not looking too severe in terms of the weather but could be disruptive, mainly due to the number of people wanting to travel.'

However, it looks like the weather will take a turn for the better later today.

In the evening it will be dry with clear spells across much of England and Wales but there will be a few showers in the west.

It will be mostly cloudy with showers in Scotland and Northern Ireland while there are clear skies forecast in north-east Scotland.

However, showers in the north will become more frequent after midnight.

And we look set to enjoy a dry Christmas Day - after some more rain on Tuesday.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: “By the end of Monday we will start to see more rain moving into Devon and Cornwall and this will move eastwards into Christmas Eve.

“But it starts clearing up for a dry Christmas Day.

"For many parts of the UK we are not going to see a white Christmas but there will be great spells of sunshine throughout the day."

The Met Office five-day forecast

Today:

Early rain over eastern and southeastern England will slowly clear, drier and brighter conditions following. Elsewhere, sunny spells but also some showers, heavy at times, over western parts of the UK. Windy in English Channel coastal areas.

Tonight:

Further showers away from the far east of the UK where conditions generally dry. Thicker cloud and more persistent rain reaching western Scotland during the early hours. Turning breezy.

Monday:

Occasional rain over Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England. Rain also into southwestern England later. Otherwise, sunny spells, but also a few showers in the west. Breezy.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:
